MEERA'S HALDI, MEHNDI AND SAANJI
Three ceremonies - Pithi (Haldi Ceremony), Mehndi and Saanji. The Pithi is the indian version of a full body beauty parlour treatment. Traditional made with Tumeric (Haldi) which has anti fungal and anti bacterial properties which helps clear skin, chick pea flour (Chana) which helps soften and and hydrate the skin and yoghurt mixed with rose water which helps to calm redness. It adds a glow to the skin and rubbing this off after it dries also have a sloughing exfoliating effect. In the olden day, this was an affordable and perhaps before even beauty parlours, this was the only beauty treatment available. Image doing this and sitting in a sauna….1000 watt skin!!!
The mehndi is olden time make up for the skin. Mehndi itself is anti fungal, anti bacterial, and cooling for the body. It draws away heat whilst leaving a beautiful stain which gets richer and richer reaching optimum colour depth at 48 hours. It’s traditionally applied by the family members and in some parts, men have it applied too. Made with natural ingredients, it signifies the commencement of an imminent wedding and ultimately makes the bride surrender from planning and itineries to sitting calmly and finally being able to enjoy the moment and take it all in. It used to be done during the Sangeet which follows next in the video. However, as designs have become intricate and artful, patience, time and peaceful surroundings are required and is done a day in advance.
The Sangeet is another opportunity for a pre wedding party and a chance for the extended families of the bride and groom to meet before the wedding. It’s a pre wedding stress reliever and a really fun night.
